Gluten-free diet gaining popularity

Here’s a great story from U.S. News & World Report about the growing popularity of gluten-free diets. Many people are choosing to avoid gluten, a protein found in grains such as wheat, barley and rye.

Here are some interesting excerpts from the story:

- In almost 1 percent of Americans with celiac disease, gluten damages the gastrointestinal tract and leads to nutrient malabsorption.
- Fifteen to 25 percent of consumers seek gluten-free products.
- In 2003, there were 135 gluten-free product introductions, and in 2008, that number jumped to 832.
- Gluten-free products sales are expected to increase 15 to 25 percent in years to come.
- About 15 percent of people might have some form of gluten sensitivity.
- Gluten might exacerbate symptoms of autism.

There are digestive enzyme supplements, such as ProSolâ„¢ Gluten Digestion,â„¢ available for people with symptoms of gluten sensitivity.
